Benu Mishra – The Life and Artistic Journey of an Assamese Master
An Artist Who Helped Shape Assam’s Creative Identity
Art is more than a visual expression. It reflects the history, emotions, traditions, and changing identity of a society. Among the artists who contributed to Assam’s evolving artistic landscape, Benu Mishra holds a significant place.
Born on 27 November 1939 in Barpeta, Assam, Benu Mishra developed a creative practice encompassing painting, sculpture, and graphic design. His journey connected the artistic education of Santiniketan with the cultural environment of Northeast India.
Early Life and Education
After moving to Guwahati with his family in 1946, Mishra continued his education in Assam. In 1957, he received a state government scholarship to study at Santiniketan, one of India’s most influential centres for artistic education.
He completed his four-year Diploma in Fine Arts and Crafts in 1961.
Santiniketan’s educational environment encouraged artists to engage with nature, traditional craftsmanship, contemporary ideas, and individual expression. This broader philosophy provides an important context for understanding Mishra’s artistic development.
Building an Artistic Career
In 1962, Mishra joined Janasanyog, Assam, as an artist. His professional journey subsequently included art teaching, exhibitions, and public-facing creative work.
His first solo exhibition was held in Kathmandu in 1964, marking an important milestone in his career.
In 1973, he joined the Government Art and Craft School, further strengthening his association with art education.
Contribution to the Gauhati Artists’ Guild
One of Mishra’s notable contributions was his role as the founding president of the Gauhati Artists’ Guild in 1976.
The Guild became an important platform for artistic exchange and creative development in Assam. His association with the organisation reflects his involvement not only in producing art but also in supporting a wider artistic community.
Recognition and Legacy
Mishra received several honours during his lifetime, including the Pranab Baruah Award in 2003 and the Bishnu Prasad Rabha Award in 2006.
His artistic journey was celebrated through retrospective exhibitions, including Benu Mishra: The Colourful Mosaic in Guwahati in 2010.
He passed away on 29 May 2019, leaving behind a body of work and an important chapter in Assam’s modern art history.
Preserving His Artistic Journey
The Benu Mishra Archives seeks to document his artistic contributions through artwork records, exhibition histories, publications, and biographical material.
By bringing these resources together, the archive offers researchers, students, artists, and art enthusiasts an opportunity to explore his work and the artistic history surrounding it.
